7 simple habits that keep your phone running well for longer

Short answer

Most phones that fail early do so because of a drop, a full memory, out-of-date software or a worn battery. A few simple habits protect against all four. None of them take long, and together they can add years to your phone's life.

Steps

  1. Use a case with raised edges

A case that sits slightly above the screen protects it when the phone lands face down, which is how most screens crack.

  2. Add a screen protector

A tempered glass protector is cheap and takes the scratches and cracks instead of your screen.

  3. Install updates

Updates fix security problems and bugs. On iPhone: Settings > General > Software Update. On Android: Settings > System > Software update (or similar). Turning on automatic updates means you don't have to remember.

  4. Keep some storage free

A phone that's almost full can slow down and struggle to install updates. Aim to keep at least 10% free. On iPhone, check Settings > General > iPhone Storage. On Android, check Settings > Storage.

  5. Back up regularly

Turn on iCloud Backup on iPhone, or Google backup on Android, so your photos and messages are safe if the phone is lost, stolen or broken.

  6. Look after the battery

Avoid heat, don't leave the phone in a hot car, and use a good-quality charger. On iPhone, keep Optimised Battery Charging turned on.

  7. Keep it clean

Wipe the screen with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth, and check the charging port for lint now and then.

If this happens, try this

  • If your phone feels slow

Restart it, install updates and free up some storage.

  • If you're running out of space

Move photos and videos to cloud storage or a computer, and delete apps you don't use.

  • If the battery doesn't last a day any more

Check the battery's health. A battery replacement is usually far cheaper than a new phone.

  • If the screen has a small crack

Cover it with a screen protector or clear tape so it doesn't spread or cut you, and get it looked at.

Things to be careful about

  • Avoid "phone cleaner" or "booster" apps from unknown developers. Your phone manages memory itself, and some of these apps show adverts or collect your data.

  • Only install apps from the App Store or Google Play.
